The Board and Tiles: Getting to Know Your Equipment
Before your first game, it helps to understand the playing field and the pieces you'll be working with. Scrabble's board and tile set are carefully designed — every element serves a purpose.
The Board
The Scrabble board is a 15×15 grid of squares, giving 225 squares in total. Most squares are plain, but colored squares scattered across the board multiply your score. These are called premium squares.
Premium Square Types
| Color | Name | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Dark red | Triple Word Score (TWS) | Multiply the entire word's score by 3 |
| Pink | Double Word Score (DWS) | Multiply the entire word's score by 2 |
| Dark blue | Triple Letter Score (TLS) | Multiply that one letter's score by 3 |
| Light blue | Double Letter Score (DLS) | Multiply that one letter's score by 2 |
| Star (center) | Double Word Score | Acts as a DWS on the very first play |
Premium squares only apply the first time a word covers them. Once a square is occupied, it never multiplies again.
Premium Square Locations
The board is symmetrical. The eight Triple Word Score squares are in the corners and midpoints of the edges: A1, A8, A15, H1, H15, O1, O8, O15 (using column letter + row number notation).
The center star is at H8. The first player must place their word so it covers this square.
The Tiles
A standard Scrabble set has 100 tiles:
- 98 letter tiles — each showing a letter and its point value
- 2 blank tiles — showing nothing; they can be any letter you choose
Tile Counts and Point Values
| Points | Letters |
|---|---|
| 0 | Blank (×2) |
| 1 | E (×12), A (×9), I (×9), O (×8), N (×6), R (×6), T (×6), L (×4), S (×4), U (×4) |
| 2 | D (×4), G (×3) |
| 3 | B (×2), C (×2), M (×2), P (×2) |
| 4 | F (×2), H (×2), V (×2), W (×2), Y (×2) |
| 5 | K (×1) |
| 8 | J (×1), X (×1) |
| 10 | Q (×1), Z (×1) |
Notice that common letters (E, A, I) have low point values but appear many times in the bag. Rare letters (Q, Z) are worth a lot but appear only once.
The Tile Bag
All 100 tiles start in a cloth or plastic bag. Players draw tiles from the bag without looking, so each draw is random. The bag is kept face-down on the table throughout the game.
The Tile Rack
Each player has a rack — a small stand that holds up to 7 tiles, kept hidden from other players. You always refill your rack to 7 tiles after each turn (as long as tiles remain in the bag).
The Score Sheet
While not a physical game component, every Scrabble game needs a way to track scores. Use paper or a phone app. Record each player's score after every turn, keeping a running total.
Caring for Your Set
- Keep tiles in the bag when not in use — losing even one tile affects gameplay.
- Handle tiles gently; the numbers can wear off older sets.
- Store the board flat to prevent warping.
Travel and Digital Versions
Scrabble comes in many formats:
- Standard: The classic 15×15 board with a bag and racks.
- Travel edition: Smaller board with tiles that lock into place.
- Deluxe/rotating: A turntable board so all players can read the words right-side-up.
- Digital apps: Scrabble GO, Wordscraper, and similar apps let you play online against friends or opponents worldwide.
The rules are the same across all versions.
Understanding the board is the first step. Once you know where the premium squares are, you'll never look at the board the same way again.
